I learned of JM’s 30 Day Board and Train program through a shelter that I volunteer at. We needed to send two dogs to them due to reactivity that we weren’t able to handle in a shelter environment, and they did an amazing job with both dogs. When my wife and I finally accepted that one of our dogs needed work on his dog reactivity, and I wasn’t able to handle it myself, I knew exactly where to go. JM’s has great staff that really does care about the dogs they train, board, and watch over in their daycare program. Their trainers are knowledgeable and professional, and take the time to form a bond with your dog to help facilitate their training, or just help them to relax while they’re there, whatever the reason. The best part, as someone who trains and works with shelter dogs, is that they have so many of these kinds of people on their staff, so many role model dogs to help them work with your dog, and all day to do as much work as is needed. These are resources that, unless you have a facility like JM’s, even the best trainers just don’t have access to. I have 4 dogs, and my reactive boy is a four year old, 120lb male rottweiler. He got to the point where my wife refused to walk him over safety concerns, and ultimately, he went after our oldest dog and severely injured him (he’s since made a fully recovery). It was at this point that I reached out to JM for help. He stayed with them for close to 40 days and came back a much more confident and manageable dog. They got him to a point where I’m confident that I can take it from here. We send him and his little brother for daycare once a week, where they continue to work on his reactivity. I can bring him to our local dog park, and while he will still react to specific types of dogs, his reactions are significantly less frequent and less intense, and he can go nose-to-nose with dogs through the fence; he’s even happy to see some of them. When he does react and I don’t catch it in time to redirect him, he’s able to reign himself in within a couple of seconds. I can also now bring a shelter dog over my house for a while to give them a break from the shelter, and get some playtime with our other dogs, and he can watch it all happen without reacting. He used to be a very playful dog, but was attacked when he was young, which flipped a switch in him. While I will never let him be unmuzzled near our old dog, or random dogs out in the world, I do feel confident that by continuing to work with him, he’ll be able to run around in the dog park without reacting like he used to some day. And I haven’t even mentioned the quality of customer service, from the regular updates, to letting us borrow a crate while his custom one is being made, just to help him continue to thrive without risking the safety of our oldest dog. They even stay in touch to make sure everything continues to go well. I really can’t say enough about how much I like this place. Prior to learning about JM’s and seeing their results first-hand, I would have sworn I would never use a board and train, but sometimes that’s exactly what’s needed. When that’s the case - and I know I’ll be working with more dogs for whom that will be the case - I wont go anywhere else.
