Dear Jeni:Are there any precautions I should take with my dog during the fall?

Fall means the leaves are changing and the holidays are coming. It also means several potential problems for pet owners to think about.Always use a leash: Never take your dog off their leash, regardless of their recall ability. Dogs can get easily startled by humans or other animals.

Keep your pup visible and warm! Dogs get cold just like humans; any temperature below 45°F is cause for discomfort, a reflective jacket or vest with both keep your four-legged friend warm and visible. Consider a reflective leash as well.

Steer Clear of Mushrooms: While many species are non-toxic, there are exceptions which, if ingested, can be potentially hazardous to your dog’s health. If ingestion happens be sure to contact your animal care provider or poison control.

Look out for allergies: Dogs can also experience the stuffy wonders of allergies. Keep an eye out for anything that might be considered a reaction such as consistent stuffiness or sneezing, and excessive itching. Your veterinarian will be able to provide solutions to canine allergies.
