Do you have questions about using CBD as a supplement for your dog or cat? We got you!
While research is still in the early stages, initial research has shown promising benefits of CBD to help ease chronic and acute pain, relieve anxiety, and improve symptoms for pets with seizure conditions. Many pet parents have seen firsthand the impact of CBD for reducing seizures, soothing anxiety, and managing joint pain in their fur-babies. While CBD is not a “quick fix” or a miracle cure, it can make a big difference in improving the quality of life for many pets!

Note: Always speak to your veterinarian before giving CBD to your pet, especially if they are currently taking any medications.
Is CBD safe to give my dog/cat?
Yes, CBD is safe for adult pets as long as the product is meant for animal use, made from hemp, and you are giving an appropriate dosage for your pet’s size and health. Always speak to your veterinarian before giving CBD to your pet, especially if they are currently taking any medications, as CBD may impact the way other medications interact with the body.
Can my dog or cat get “high” from CBD?
No. CBD products for pets are made from hemp, which is a different strain of cannabis than that used for marijuana. Hemp contains little to no THC, so your fur-baby cannot feel “high” from it. Legally, CBD products cannot contain more than 0.3% THC, though many CBD products for pets contain 0.0% THC. Never give your pet a CBD product meant for human use, as these may contain THC in amounts that are toxic to pets.
Is CBD for pets the same as CBD for humans?
No. CBD products for pets are only made from hemp, while CBD for human consumption can be made from other strains of the cannabis plant. CBD products for humans may contain amounts of THC that are toxic for pets, and sometimes include other ingredients that aren’t meant for animal consumption.
What forms does CBD come in for pets?
CBD comes in three main forms for our furry friends: treats, oils, and topicals. CBD-infused treats and soft chews are an easy and yummy way to deliver health benefits to your pet. CBD oils are given directly by mouth. CBD balms and other topicals are designed to be rubbed onto your pet’s body to deliver the benefits through the skin.
What is the difference between using treats and oils? Is one better?
CBD-infused chews and treats are generally faster-acting than oils, though the effects don’t last as long (a couple of hours at most). These are often a good fit for pets with situation-specific anxiety – such as anxiety when going to the vet, visiting the groomer, or during thunderstorms.
CBD oils are more often recommended for long-term use, such as to help dogs with chronic anxiety and stress, arthritis or other joint pain, and seizure conditions. CBD oil is generally given at the same time daily over a long period of time. It can take a few weeks to build up in your pet’s system and begin to have a noticeable effect.
How do I start giving my pet CBD?
It’s important to introduce CBD into your pet’s body gradually, starting with the recommended small dose and monitoring your pet for any symptoms or changes. Keep in mind that you likely won’t see a major impact the first time you give your pet CBD. It may take a few weeks for your fur-baby’s body to adjust and begin to see the benefits. If you are planning to use CBD for a particular event (such as a vet visit, a big party, or fireworks season) start well in advance, to allow time for your pet’s body to adjust to CBD and see a positive impact.

Will CBD help stop my puppy’s destructive chewing, running around, or hyper activity?
No. CBD is not a good fit for baby animals, and will not help curb destructive behaviors or calm down your energetic puppy or kitten. It’s normal for young pets to have a lot of energy! If you are looking for methods to curb destructive behaviors, learn more about our Motivational Obedience Training, PLAYtrain® Doggie Daycare, and Day School. If you feel your puppy exhibits severe anxiety, speak with a professional trainer or pet care expert before turning to supplements.
Will CBD cure my dog’s anxiety?
CBD is not a cure for fear or anxiety. While it can help relax the body and soothe physical symptoms of stress, it doesn’t stop anxiety. If your dog or cat is struggling with extreme anxiety or a particular fear, we recommend behavior modification through positive, motivation-based training techniques.
