Teach Your Dog to Walk Calmly and Confidently with One of Our Favorite Training Tools
Does your dog pull like they’re training for a sled team? You’re not alone—leash pulling is one of the most common challenges for pet parents, and it can make daily walks feel more like a chore than a joy. We understand the struggle, and that’s where the Halti headcollar comes in, offering a potential solution and relief— trust us, your shoulders will thank you.
The Halti headcollar is one of our favorite tools for helping dogs (and their humans!) enjoy safer, more relaxed walks together. With the right introduction, this simple piece of equipment can be an absolute game-changer for you and your pup! This Halti How-To Guide will explain how to use a Halti headcollar effectively, why we at JM love them, and everything you need to know to get started.
What is a Halti for Dogs?
A Halti is a type of dog headcollar designed to gently guide your dog’s head and redirect their attention during walks. Unlike traditional collars or body harnesses, the Halti gives you control without putting pressure on your dog’s neck, back, or chest. Think of it like a halter used for horses— gentle, effective, and respectful of the animal’s natural movements.
Halti is a brand name (from Company of Animals), but the term is often used to describe this style of headcollar. We recommend selecting a Halti that clips over your dog's face and snout, and connects to their collar—this way, if they accidentally slip out, they’re still attached to the lead somehow. How to Introduce a Halti to a Dog
Desensitization is the key to success!
Before you throw the halti over your dog’s snout and head out the door, it’s super important to take your time introducing it to your pup. This ensures your dog builds a positive association with the device, creating comfort, not resistance.
Step 1: Let Them Explore
Start by letting your pup explore the Halti in a calm space. Reward curiosity and interaction with the device.

Step 2: Try It On Without Clipping
Once they’re comfortable with the Halti’s existence, gently place it on their snout—no clipping yet—and gradually increase that duration with positive reinforcement. Take it slow and always go at your dog’s pace.
Pro tip: Some dogs need more time to accept a headcollar than they do a harness or regular collar. That’s okay! Be patient. This tool will be worth the effort.
Step 3: Increase Duration and Comfort
As your dog becomes more comfortable, begin clipping the headcollar and having them wear it around the house. Continue to reward them and slowly increase the length of wear time.
Step 4: Take a Short Walk
When your dog is relaxed wearing the Halti, it’s time for a short walk. Again, start slow, keeping rewards handy, and focus on calm leash manners. Gradually increase walk lengths as your pup gains confidence.

How a Halti Harness Works
Unlike a harness, the Halti gently guides your dog’s head—where the nose goes, the body follows.
Here’s what makes the Halti a great training tool:
- Reduces pulling without force or discomfort
- Redirects movement gently, encouraging calm focus
- Applies gentle pressure on calming zones (nose bridge and behind the ears)
- Allows a full range of motion— yes, your dog can still bark, eat, drink, and play
It’s not a muzzle: A common misconception is that Haltis and muzzles are cruel or punishing— not true! We use Haltis and muzzles as training tools through positive, motivational obedience training to create happy, healthy, well-mannered pups.
Hooray for Haltis!
At JM Pet Resort, we love tools that prioritize comfort, safety, and learning. The Halti isn’t a magic fix, but paired with positive training, it can completely transform your walks.
Not all headcollars are created equal, so we only recommend trusted products like the Halti leash and headcollar from Company of Animals. Whether your dog is reactive, excitable, or simply a strong puller, a Halti harness can be a valuable addition to your dog's training toolbox.
For an even deeper transformation, consider enrolling your pup in one of our Board and Train programs or sign up for our Pullers & Jumpers Training Clinic, where we teach loose-leash manners and walking using humane and positive motivational obedience training methods, including the Halti.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Halti stop my dog from pulling?
Yes— when introduced properly and paired with training, the Halti significantly reduces pulling by redirecting your dog’s movements and attention. You can start looking forward to walks with your pup again.
How long does it take for a dog to get used to a Halti?
It varies by dog. Some dogs adjust within a few days, while others may take a few weeks to adjust. Consistency, patience, and rewards are key.
At what age should you use a Halti?
Once your dog has a fully developed snout and is ready for structured leash training, typically around 5-6 months old. If you have questions, our Trainers are happy to help you make an informed decision.
Are Halti leads cruel?
No! When introduced with care and used correctly, Haltis are humane and effective training tools. They’re popular, safe dog walking gear and head collars for reactive dogs.
Do Haltis stop biting or barking?
No, a Halti is not a muzzle; wearing a Halti, dogs can still bark, eat, open their mouths, and bite. A basket muzzle may be a more suitable option for your pup to prevent biting. Our team at JM Pet Resort & Veterinary Clinic would be happy to discuss your options to help your pup live their happiest, healthiest life.
What size Halti is my dog?
Size depends on your dog’s breed, weight, and snout shape. We carry a range of Halti headcollar sizes. Visit our Retail store, where our team is ready to help you choose the right fit for your pup!
Will my dog have to wear a Halti forever?
It truly depends on the dog— their personality and acceptance of the tool, how it’s introduced to them, and the consistency with which it's used. Remember, the Halti is a training tool designed to help your dog learn polite leash manners. With a healthy introduction and consistent practice, many pups can eventually transition away from it. That said, some dogs benefit from longer-term use, and that’s okay, too! Need help deciding which training tools are right for your dog? Our expert trainers are always here to help guide you!
