What are the best and safest ways to prevent my dog from getting a sunburn especially in the hot summer months?
Most pet owners don’t think to protect their dogs from the sun’s harmful rays but with the hot summer months, it is definitely something to be aware of and take precaution. Dogs and many other animals are susceptible to sunburns especially on exposed areas like the nose, stomach and edges of the ears. Some dogs do have natural protection while others need extra care such as light haired dogs, puppies with light coats and hairless breeds such as the Chinese Crested. It is very important to remember to never use human sunscreens on an animal. Zinc Oxide is toxic to dogs and if ingested, can cause damage to their red blood cells. The best way to protect your pet is to find sunscreen at your local pet supply store or simply bring out that kiddie pool and place it under the shade for those hot summer days!
