Since 1999, the Brockton Blue Dog Shelter has been open, serving the needs of the community and creating a legacy of caring for dogs in need. As the Shelter entered the 4thquarter 2016, we faced a financial shortfall and as a result of the mounting debt, the Brockton Blue Dog Shelter will be closing on December 31, 2016.
Despite the most recent Golf FORE Blue Dog tournament, an annual fundraiser, the Shelter was still in the red; even though the fundraiser was successful, it could not cover the Shelter’s current shortfall. The Board of Directors and Director & Founder, Jeni Mather want to personally thank everyone who participated in and donated to this years’ event.
The funding challenges the Brockton Blue Dog Shelter faced were not uncommon to many nonprofit animal rescue organizations. Operational costs of staff, boarding, heat, electricity, training, food, veterinary bills as well as running fundraisers and outreach community programs are all the realities of keeping a Shelter going and expenses are much more than people realize. The monthly costs to keep the Shelter open can run up to $20,000 per month depending on how many dogs are in the Shelter and on all of the other costs associated in taking care of the dogs, and we do not have the financial resources to sustain our operation. Our shelter dogs have always been our first priority even when we were behind in paying our bills, and we incurred increasing debt trying to continue to care for them.
The Shelter will no longer be taking in any dogs as of September 30 and we will work on placing the last dogs in forever homes as soon as possible. We will still be available until December 31, 2016 to offer support to past adopters for any questions or concerns they may have regarding their recent adoption. The Shelter will continue to run its Yankee Candle Fundraiser and scheduled Paint Night to help offset some of the existing debt.
To date, the Shelter has placed 1,775 dogs into loving homes which we could not have done without the incredibly hard working staff, Board members and long list of devoted volunteers. We are very thankful for the support we have received over the years from the community, because without it, we would not have survived this long. The Shelter wants to close remembering who we were: as the Shelter that operated like no other, the Shelter that went above and beyond the routine care of spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and other medical care.
It breaks the heart of the Board members to make this decision, but there really is no other choice. The next phase will be to finalize all the legal and accounting obligations and close the Shelter in good standing.
Thank you for your support and understanding as we go through this difficult process.
